What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet

This is one of Shakespeare’s most famous quotes, where Juliet tells Romeo that a name is an artificial and meaningless arrangement. Juliet argues that the names of things do not matter, only what things “are”. The same approach cannot be said of a medical negligence investigation.

People can allude to have knowledge of such matters during a conversation. Abbreviations are now a common part of modern life but knowing their actual meaning or understanding their impact is very much a key part of following the discussion.  Many people know of the writings of Lewis Carroll and their presumed knowledge of the fictional characters in Alice in Wonderland.  In reality, the book is entitled Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and has a sequel titled Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There.  One of the best loved characters in the books is the Mad Hatter, although this name was never used by Lewis Carroll and the character is actually named ‘The Hatter’.

This whole issue may appear superfluous, but is a clear demonstration of the difference between perception and knowledge of key material.  This type of attention to detail should be a primary consideration for anyone wishing to undertake a medical or clinical negligence claim.  Due to the recent changes in funding for civil litigation, many personal injury solicitors are looking to embark upon hospital and dental claims as an easy form of additional work.  But, this type of negligence investigation requires many years of experience and detailed examination of a person’s medical records, which contain a myriad of medical abbreviations and terminology.

When choosing a clinical negligence lawyer, perhaps it is relevant to pick someone who knows how to see through the looking glass, and understands what is to be found there.
